Career fulfillment, free time, maximum revenue—a perfect triad for every clinician—but one too seldom realized. In fact, physician burnout is a very real—and common—phenomenon. In the first known national study on the topic, researchers found that nearly half of physicians experienced at least 1 symptom of burnout.1
Here, psychiatrist and “burnout” expert Dr Joseph Weiner offers strategies for mental health professionals to achieve the perfect triad in a balanced and realistic way. In Part 1 of this 2-part webcast, Dr Weiner draws from organizational literature to outline practical strategies for professionals to achieve balance. He offers suggestions for clinicians to maximize the overlap between core professional goals and personal values to make the best use of their time.
Dr Weiner is Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Medicine at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine in Hempstead, New York, where he co-directs the 4-year curriculum in Communication and Interpersonal Skills. He is in private practice in Great Neck, New York, where he focuses on the care of patients with depression, anxiety, bereavement, and burnout, particularly in physicians who make up a large percentage of his practice.
