Clarifying ABA Parent Training Goals

ABA parent training is complex. There is an endless amount of goals that could be worked on within the context of ABA parent training. There are so many different skills that a parent could learn to help improve their child’s behaviors and functioning and to help improve the parent’s life, as well.

10 Effective Skills to Work on With Parents

Here is a list of 10 skills that are found to be helpful for parents to learn more about from parent trainers:

  1. Communication skills to use within the parent-child relationship (how to talk to the child), such as active listening
  2. How to help children identify and manage emotions
  3. Building positive parent-child relationships (building rapport with their child)
  4. Allowing the child to lead activities when it is appropriate and helpful to do so
  5. Providing praise and attention to the child
  6. Providing reinforcement for their child’s behaviors
  7. Learning more about the concept of time out or other “disciplinary” strategies
  8. Responding consistently to the child
  9. To frequently interact in a positive manner with their child
  10. The importance of practicing the skills (sometimes while being observed and provided with feedback by the parent trainer)
