I am a first responder with a Master’s in Emergency Management and Criminal Justice. I just wanted to add that first responders are trained to handle these situations but we ourselves experience our own versions of trauma as a result from them. Recently a lot of articles have been released that discusses PTSD in first responders and the suicide rate being higher than line of duty deaths as a result of built of dealing with such traumas. Centers like the Honor Wellness Center in Connecticut are out there to help first responders work through the trauma of the job. So while I agree first responders are more trained to handle the situation described in the article, we struggle with the trauma just the same. We just take care of you first.
