I remember Marca logging in to the first Bootcamp kickoff group coaching call last year. It has been delightful to coach her through the process of coming back from burn out to launching into private practice. I think a LOT of people can identify with many pieces of her journey that she was kind enough to permit to be shared with y’all for some inspiration!
PLEASE read her entire story and see what it REALLY takes to make that kind of fast progress in private practice. There is often a LOT that happens behind the scenes of successful therapists.
Marca enrolled in Business School Bootcamp for Therapists January 31, 2018. February 2nd, I posted a question in the community group asking 2018 enrollees to share what has changed since they enrolled, and she posted this on February 4th, 2019. Here is her story in her own words:
“Mine is long…because that’s how I roll. Take what you need and leave the rest! Pre-bootcamp, starting in 2015, I would listen to free webinars and cry. I was completely burnt out from my pre-license experience in no pay crisis counseling. To make matters worse I’d been through a divorce the last week of my 3000-hour internship, and then a dear friend died of suicide. I was a Marriage and Family Therapist, and a suicide hotline counselor, how could this happen!? Facing the fact I had PTSD, I went to therapy, and I listened to Kelly and Miranda like voices in the dark. They gave me so much hope that I could do something, someday with all the work I had put in.
I took a three-year break, listened to all the webinars, met my sweetheart, passed my boards, turned 50, and totally broke, pulled out my credit card and enrolled in bootcamp for Spring of 2018. In the first bootcamp I was SHOCKED at the amount of material in the 8 learning modules for the amount of money I had invested. I had expected some inspiration and some good business ideas, but DAMN. This was no longer just two therapist /coaches inspiring me on free webinars, this was a Pandora’s box of in-depth schooling on business. This is the business schooling that all therapists should have to go along with grad school. To top it off, Kelly and Miranda were there to support, but they obviously believe in the program they’ve created and they expect you to do. the. work. It became clear they were not giving me a fish to feed me once, they were teaching me HOW to fish so I could… you know the saying… yeah, that! Fish for life!
The first round I did very little business stuff, but I read all the modules, got overwhelmed sometimes, and realized I would be in this for the long haul. I got to hang out with Kelly and Miranda on live calls, healed some deep business resistance with my battle buddies cheering me on, cried a lot, and got massively inspired.
My first bootcamp was basically all about reclaiming my power, and coming back to the original reason I became a therapist. Because I LOVE helping folks, and I am good at it. I decided in those two weeks to get up and stop crying (as much), move across the country, live where I want to live, and launch my first PP. My significant other, who has a PhD from Duke, came with me because she was looking over my shoulder at the modules, and totally believed what I was learning in bootcamp would work. (She also believed in me, and luckily was re-inventing herself and leaving her academic job search).
We made the 2800 mile move, found a place to live, found a tiny affordable windowless office, painted it, made it cozy, bought furniture, all on a credit card. Leap and the net will appear, right? Bootcamp is my net.
In my second 2-week Working Session October 2018, (thank the Gods you get to repeat as many times as you like), while painting the office, I got down with the nuts and bolts of business. I dove head first into the Pandora’s box of information in the eight modules. I built a core business doing stuff that was. not. fun. I ate lots of “frogs”. Tax frogs, organizing frogs, web design frogs, setting fee frogs, technology frogs. Not fun. I whined a lot. Frogs taste bad.
With Kelly and Miranda, and bootcampers cheering me on, my partner and I pieced it all together. Then we built a website following what we learned. I was on one of the live support calls talking, whining probably, about all that I had done, and getting really nit-picky about my website when Miranda exclaimed “JUST GO LIVE!” and to my delight, Kelly called me a “Unicorn”. Meaning I am unique and have lots to offer folks, go for it! They were RIGHT! I went live with my website, and with very little networking, despite launching during the holidays, 13 weeks later I have 16 clients, all of them a GREAT fit for me, most of them full fee. ( Although Miranda has challenged me that my full fee is not really my full fee, so look out Bootcamp #3 here I come).
I am now easily paying the rent, I am paying off the credit card, I have a tax guy and I like talking to him. I am loving my work. I bought new shoes! All of my clients are in my niches of trauma in LGBTQ and Native American/POC. Clients who have needed a therapist like me, are finding me and their lives are changing so powerfully. I know how to say no to clients that aren’t a great fit. I am not burning out. A hospital admin. A person called me the other day and said they saw my website and want to refer clients to me. I have been invited to be on a Diversity Advisory Council to an organization I’ve wanted to be part of for years. Along with a position with them, they will be providing me their highly sought after, groundbreaking MDMA assisted trauma therapy this year in trade for a few hours a month of meaningful advisory work to help make this therapy accessible to POC and LGBTQ folks. Why? Because bootcamp empowered me to have a conversation with them about what I have to offer, and they also think I’m a Unicorn!
I can’t wait to go back for more. Build the PP further, help more people in a better way, start looking at passive streams of income, and at a bigger office with windows this time. There is much left to learn! #bootcampforever #noburnoutworkforever#battlebuddiesrock #kellyandmirandarad”
I love that she was both NOT an overnight success and an overnight success. I LOVE that she is reaching a group that is underrepresented. I LOVE that she is taking the steps to make sure SHE is taking care of, while doing great work with clients. I LOVE that did the HARD work and stepped outside of her comfort zone and got to experience such a quick response from the community!
